Teriparatide is a medication used to treat osteoporosis by promoting bone formation. It acts as a parathyroid hormone analog, stimulating osteoblasts and osteoclasts in the body. When administered intermittently in small doses, it stimulates osteoblasts to promote bone formation, increasing bone mass, density, and strength, reducing the risk of fractures in osteoporosis patients. Teriparatide is used to treat postmenopausal women with osteoporosis, men with primary or hypogonadal osteoporosis aiming to increase bone mass, and men and women with osteoporosis related to continuous systemic glucocorticoid therapy.
